August 15 2007 - Brought to you by the Melbourne University Debating Society

Week 4 - Semester 2 - 2007

*MUDS News

*Hamish Malcolm Round 1

Thanks to the enthusiastic speaker turnout and willingness of 5 adjudicators to get in on the fun, Hamish Malcolm has started with a bang! Those who couldn't make it missed out on the finest delicacies that Grattan St Domino's has to offer, and four rooms of passionate debate over the motion 'that this house would impose trade sanctions on countries that allow the use of child labour.'  The adjudicators felt the debates were 'impressive' and 'very close'- leaving the four coveted Hamish Grand Final positions open to any team at this stage. Afterwards, a large group of us ventured down to the Corkman (MUDS' pub), for the pure bliss of potato wedges, pub dinners and free beer.

Each week we will email around "The 8" from the Hamish Malcolm Cup as well as the draw for the next round.

The 8:

1. Tripod, Obama for America

3. Pro Publicum Bono

4. Lord Voldemort's Army

5. (Child) Workers of the World Unite!, Pavlova's Dogs

7. JASS

8. Dance Dance Revolution

*Upcoming Events

*British Parliamentary Novice Competition

This semester we are holding a small tournament for people new to BP.  It's a strict novice rule (can't have been in more than two Hamish Malcolm Cups or equivalents) which means that it's a great opportunity to go up against people with similar levels of experience to yourself, get some experience and have some more debating fun.

For those of you who aren't able to debate because of the novice rule, it's a great opportunity to get some more adjudication practice in and we'd love to have you there.

Details:

Date: Sunday 26th of August

Where: Law School

Cost: TBA but not more than $5

Those interested should RSVP to hapsheppard@gmail.com

*MUDS Annual Dinner
The MUDS 'Annual Dinner', to be held on Friday the 31st of August, is also fast approaching. The venue for the annual dinner will be 'Gurkhas Nepalese Restaurant', located at 258 Lygon Street, Carlton. Tickets are now on sale for $20 and can be conveniently purchased at the second round of the Hamish Malcolm Cup next Tuesday evening.

Included in the ticket price is a three course meal at Gurkhas Nepalese Restaurant, all the wine and soft drink your heart could desire, a chance to win cool door prizes and of course the fine company of fellow debaters. The 'Annual Dinner' also traditionally involves comedy debates and awards and so should not be missed!

Tickets are limited, so please purchase early to involve the inevitable heartache and regret which will come from missing out on this most excellent event!

Even if you don't plan on debating this semester, please still come along and join in the MUDS festivities.

We hope to see you there!

Cheers,

Trina Malone

(Social Officer at MUDS)

*World Universities Debating Championships 2007-8

What is Worlds? The World University Debating Championships (or Worlds) is the largest debating tournament in the world. It is held in British Parliamentary style and attracts competitors from across the globe. It is held from December 27th – 5th January.

Where is Worlds? Worlds is held in a different location every year. This year it is being hosted by Assumption University in Thailand. This presents a fantastic opportunity for MUDS members to attend Worlds as it is much closer to home than recent tournaments. This makes airfares significantly cheaper meaning everyone is able to attend. For more information about this years tournament go to www.assumptionworlds.com

How much will it cost? Registration for tournament has been set at 15,500 Baht. This is equivalent to approximately $610 AUD and will include all your accommodation and most meals. In previous years MUDS has been able to provide sponsorship to all participants to help offset the cost of attending but this is conditional on us being allocated funding.

Can I go? You can attend as either a debater or an adjudicator. You do not have to have attended Worlds before or even a debating tournament. Worlds is a tournament that presents an amazing opportunity for people of all levels of experiences. As MUDS can only send a limited number of debaters and adjudicators we will be holding trials to select teams and adjudicators. Trials will be held on Sunday, October 7th.

What do I need to do? MUDS may have the opportunity to register additional teams and adjudicators but we can only do that if we are certain that people will fill those spots. If you are considering attending Worlds you must email mudsonline@gmail.comindicating your interest by Friday, August 17th. Please include whether you:

    1. Definitely want to go - as either a debater OR adjudicator.

    2. Definitely want to go but ONLY as a debater or adjudicator (specify which).

    3. Are interested in going but depends on funding

    4. Are thinking about it.
