3-v-3 Comp

The Melbourne University Debating Society 3-v-3 internal competition is the first internal competition run by the Society each year. It is a '3 on 3' style competition (the same as DAV debating) and a great introduction to debating at a university level.

The competition is helf on Tuesday nights over semester one. The standard of debates ranges from 'pretty darn good' (ie, the grand final in front of our sponsors) to 'pretty ordinary' (think DAV C-grade on a good day!). It’s a low key, low stress, low preparation competition –- resulting in high amusement, high enjoyment and general debating highs!

About the 2008 Competition

Why should I participate?

There are three excellent reasons to do internals. Firstly, you will meet delightful MUDSians you never knew existed and get to know your teammates a lot better. Secondly, your argumentative skills will improve enormously. You will see amazing debaters at work, get heaps of practice at secret topics, and receive useful feedback from your adjudicators. Thirdly, and most importantly, you will have loads of fun.

But I haven’t debated before!

Don't worry. One of the purposes of internals is to familiarise new members with university-style debating. This is a novice competition, so no team can have more than one ‘experienced’ debater, and debates are power-paired, so don’t worry about your team being shredded week after week or anything like that.

How do I form a team?

Teams must consist of 5 MUDSians, with at least 3 attending each round. You can register as an individual, with a friend, or as an entire team.
Because this is a novice competition, no more than 1 ‘experienced’ debater is permitted per team - this means anyone who has broken at Easters or has attended Australs or Worlds.

Furthermore, each team must also provide at least 2 adjudications over the 5 rounds so make sure you have at least one accredited adjudicator on your team. Each ‘experienced’ debater must adjudicate at least once.

Members are also strongly encouraged to come up with an amusing team name, or else one will be assigned for them.

How do we register our team?

Easy! Just fill out the online registration form. You will need your team members’ names, email addresses, mobile numbers, novice/experienced statuses, years and debating experience. If you have trouble, or have any questions or concerns, contact the Internal Competitions Officers Chris Lum and Tom Sutherland at muds.internal.competitions@gmail.com.

Don’t want to commit yourself to debating every week?

Why not just volunteer to adjudicate, for as many (or few) of the rounds as you like. You’ll get great adjudication practice and Chris and Tom will be very grateful! Just send us an email with your details and which rounds you would be interested in attending.
