*MUDS News
This year MUDS was particularly successful at Australs, the largest 3 on 3 debating tournament in the world. The tournament was run by UT Mara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. MUDS sent a contingent of 13 people which included three teams and four adjudicators. One of our adjudicators, Lucia Pietropoli, was a Deputy Chief Adjudicator of the tournament and adjudicated the Grand Final. Our three other adjudicators Duncan Campbell, Chris Williams and Amy Fazio performed fantastically never having to trainee adjudicate a single round. Chris adjudicated the octo-finals and Duncan adjudicated the ESL Grand Final. Both are significant achievements as neither have attended an Australs previously.
Our debaters also performed fantastically with all three teams doing MUDS proud. Melbourne 3, comprising of Laura Bellamy, Anna Blair and Jess Chiew, won a number of tough debates and only narrowly missed out on breaking. Melbourne 1, comprising of Seamus Coleman, Lauren Knight and Chris Hibbard broke but lost narrowly in their octo-final. Melbourne 2, comprising of Nicole Lynch, Duncan Kauffman and Sienna Merope, also broke and progressed through to the quarter-final and were unlucky to lose that debate in a split decision.
Hi everyone!
A warm welcome to MUDS semester 2, 2007!
We have many social events planned for this semester, so get ready to mark your calendar and transform into a MUDS social butterfly!
We would really encourage everybody to come to the Corkman as it is a great opportunity to get to know your fellow debaters, receive dramatic blow by blow accounts of debates and of course take advantage of the Corkman's cheap drinks offer on Tuesday evenings. The Corkman is located on the corner of Pelham and Leicester st opposite the law school:
The MUDS 'Annual Dinner', to be held on Friday the 31st of August, is also fast approaching. The venue for the annual dinner will be 'Gurkhas Nepalese Restaurant', located at 258 Lygon Street, Carlton. Tickets are now on sale for $20 and can be conveniently purchased at the first round of the Hamish Malcolm Cup next Tuesday evening. Included in the ticket price is a three course meal at Gurkha's restaurant, all the wine and soft drink your heart could desire, a chance to win cool door prizes and of course the fine company of fellow debaters. The 'Annual Dinner' also traditionally involves comedy debates and awards and so should not be missed!
Tickets are limited, so please purchase early to involve the inevitable heartache and regret which will come from missing out on this most excellent event!
Even if you don't plan on debating this semester, please still come along and join in the MUDS festivities.
We hope to see you there!
Cheers,
Trina Malone
(Social Officer at MUDS)
LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP FOR THE COMPETITION!!
What is the Hamish Malcolm Cup?
The Hamish Malcolm Cup is the internal debating competition that Melbourne University Debating Society will run in second semester 2007. It is held in the British Parliamentary debating style.
The Cup (formerly the VC's Cup) was renamed after Hamish Malcolm in 2006.
What is this 'British Parliamentary' styleIt is the style that the World University Debating Championships (very big and prestigious) are held in. It involves four teams of two people. There are also Points of Information which are short interjections into your opponents' speeches.
The debating itself is similar to the traditional DAV (schools) style; you just need to be persuasive. This style is affectionately referred to as "BP" (pronounced 'b' 'p'! ).
Why should I get Involved?
Sign up by yourself, with a friend or two, or with an entire team. Teams will have a minimum of four members (you're welcome to sign up with less- we'll organise extra members for you)- but feel free to sign up a larger team, too.
Teams can have no more than one non-novice.
Where is Worlds? Worlds is held in a different location every year. This year it is being hosted by Assumption University in Thailand. This presents a fantastic opportunity for MUDS members to attend Worlds as it is much closer to home than recent tournaments. This makes airfares significantly cheaper meaning everyone is able to attend. For more information about this years tournament go to www.assumptionworlds.com
How much will it cost? Registration for tournament has been set at 15,500 Baht. This is equivalent to approximately $610 AUD and will include all your accommodation and most meals. In previous years MUDS has been able to provide sponsorship to all participants to help offset the cost of attending but this is conditional on us being allocated funding.
Can I go? You can attend as either a debater or an adjudicator. You do not have to have attended Worlds before or even a debating tournament. Worlds is a tournament that presents an amazing opportunity for people of all levels of experiences. As MUDS can only send a limited number of debaters and adjudicators we will be holding trials to select teams and adjudicators. Trials will be held on Sunday, October 7th.
