President's Cup is a 3-v-3 tournament hosted by the Debaters Association of Victoria, held this year on May 17-18, this coming weekend. With both novice and open finals, President's Cup is a great way for those who went to Easters to continue to build their skills, those who didn't go to Easters to get a taste of tournament fun without travelling or spending too much money, and for those going to Australs to get some practice with their teams.
You can register a team if you have one organised (all three members must be novices if you want to be eligible for the novice break), or register individually or in a pair if you just want to be put in a team. Adjudicators are in high demand for the tournament, and will receive a discount on registration.
The tournament this year will be held at Melbourne Girls College in Richmond. Both days run from around 9am to 5pm, with exciting social functions in the evening!
Registration costs $40 for debaters and $25 for adjudicators. This price is inclusive of the debating, morning and afternoon teas, entry to both social functions and prizes. The tournament costs will be collected on Saturday morning when you are signed in. If you are not a member of the DAV, add $10.
A large number of MUDS members will be attending the tournament, and we hope you'll join in the fun! Please register online, or call the DAV office on 9348 9477 for more information.
The publication date of the next MUDSlinger is approaching, and articles are required! Please make contact with Publications Officer Rachele Troup for more information.
After a long break (including Easters), the feverish excitement of the 3-on-3 internal competition finally resumed this week, debating the topic "That employers should monitor their employees' internet use", with four affirmative teams and seven negative teams winning. We saw a shake-up of the ladder, with The Comely Milkmaids now in first place, followed by Feminists for Obama. The best speakers for the round were Laura Bellamy and Seamus Coleman, and the best novice speakers were Amy Fazio and Marina Connelly - which is pretty awesome considering that it was Marina's first debate for the competition. Sadly, five teams forfeited the round, because they had one or fewer members turn up. On the upside however, this did offer Daniel Kinsey the opportunity to show off his skills at simultaneously debating and adjudicating The Light Bulbs.
Remember, the next two rounds, plus the Grand Final, are all happening over the next three weeks - so be sure to put them in your diaries! We'll see you all next Tuesday for Round 4!

The Easters report in the last MUDS Update should have congratulated James Wilson and Alex Chapman for being ranked equal fourth best novice speaker for the tournament, and equal 13th best speaker overall. Also, the amazing equal eighth best speaker ranking of MUDS treasurer Laura Bellamy should have been mentioned! We regret the error, and congratulate all Easters participants again.
