MUDS Update W11
MUDS Update!(Semi-Final Fever Edition)President's Cup Report MUDS performed very strongly at the President's Cup tournament held last weekend by the Debaters Association of Victoria. Many MUDS members attended as both debaters and adjudicators. The grand final, on the topic That Israel should pre-emptively invade Iran was won against "Unicorn Reunion" containing MUDS committee member Daniel McNamara by "The Presidential Skeleton", a team of MUDS dignitaries: Seamus Coleman, President; Nicole Lynch, Immediate Past President; Lucia Pietropaoli, Past President. MUDS member Duncan Campbell was a member of "Two Fags and a Hag", the novice champions, winning the novice grand final on the topic That equal opportunity laws should apply to religious organisations. Congratulations also to Lucia Pietropaoli (3rd best speaker), Seamus Coleman and Nicole Lynch (equal 4th best speakers), Laura Bellamy and Simon Thomas (equal 8th best speakers), Charisma Dungan (equal 2nd best novice speaker), Nick Liau (8th best novice speaker), Monique Hardinge (10th best novice speaker), Jonathan Benney (chaired the novice grand final adjudication panel), Wayne Jocic and Rachele Troup (adjudicated the novice grand final). MUDSlinger - Call for articlesThe publication date of the next MUDSlinger is approaching, and articles are required! Please make contact with Publications Officer Rachele Troup for more information. 3-v-3 Cup reportLast Tuesday: ROUND 4 WRAP-UPRound 4 of the 3-on-3 internal competition was a lot of fun, although half of you wouldn't know that, because you failed to show up! The 16 wonderful teams that didn't forfeit got to debate the topic 'That cheap air flights should be sacrificed in the fight against climate change', which 5 affirmative teams and 3 negative teams won. The sole remaining undefeated team is the Comely Milkmaids (on 8 points), and with five teams on 7 points, and another seven teams on 6 points, the four finals spots are still up for grabs. This Tuesday: ROUND 5 + SEMI-FINALSThis coming Tuesday will be a bit different, consisting of both Round 5 AND the Semi-Finals on the one night. Roll call will be at 5.30 sharp, and the topic release for Round 5 will be at 5.45. After Round 5, we will all head over to the law school, where there will be FREE pizza and the four teams breaking into the finals will be announced. The Semi-Finals topic will then be released at 8pm. (The Semi-Finals winners will be up against one another at the Grand Final the following week.) So, make sure your team is at Redmond Barry 1120 at 5.30 sharp this coming Tuesday to be in contention for the finals (you never know, with everyone else forfeiting, anyone could make it!) Note the earlier start time - ROLL CALL IS AT 5.30! Even if you don't break to the finals, make sure you stick around to watch and support the finalists - they will be great debates and you will get free pizza. See you then! Tom Sutherland and Chris Lum
