Reminder: Expressions of interest for Australs trials should be sent to MUDS (mudsonline@gmail.com) by Tuesday 29th April. We encourage people to trial, even if they are not yet sure whether they can attend the tournament!
MUDS returns today from "Easters", the national intervarsity debating championships. MUDS was particularly successful, performing strongly in the competition rounds and breaking two teams and four adjudicators to the finals. Melbourne 2 (Emily Basile, James Wilson, and Amy Fazio) were eliminated after the octo-finals, and Melbourne 3 (Erica Leaney, Jonathan Benney, and Alex Finkel) were eliminated after the quarter-finals. Our breaking adjudicators were Seamus Coleman, Phil Barker, Nicole Lynch (all adjudicating the grand final), and Daniel Clifton. James Wilson and Alex Chapman were ranked equal fourth best speaker for the tournament.
A good time was had by all, and we're already looking forward to next year's Easters, to be hosted by the University of Queensland.
Want to try a different style of debating? Then don't miss "Different Debating Night" this Tuesday (29 April). Although MUDS tends to debate in 3-v-3/Australasian and British Parliamentary styles, there are many other styles of debating – historical debating, American parliamentary, policy debate, All Asians style, NZ styles... MUDSians will have an opportunity to learn about and participate in debates in a style different to what they are used to. Don't miss what promises to be a very enjoyable night!
ADAM (Another Day at Melbourne) is an invitational inter-university debating tournament hosted by MUDS. The tournament is in Australs style, and enjoys a reputation as being an excellent stand-alone tournament as well as being the leading Australian Australs warm-up tournament. ADAM 2008 will be held at the University of Melbourne 27-29 June.
The MUDS Committee is seeking applications from those keen to join the ADAM Organising Committee. The following positions are available:
If you are interested in helping run this great tournament, please email an application (including the position you are interested in, your reasons for applying, and any relevant experience) to mudsonline@gmail.com by Sunday 4 May.
MUDS (together with The Oaktree Foundation) hosted its first public debate for 2008 with a lunchtime debate on the topic: "that trade liberalisation is failing the world's poor". Speakers from leading NGOs and think-tanks, the University of Melbourne, Oaktree, and MUDS passionately argued both sides of the case; questions from the floor after the debate proved to be equally contentious. Thank you to all MUDS members who helped swell our audience, and special congratulations and thanks to MUDS's very own Nicole Lynch and Tom O'Connor (acting in his Oaktree capacity) for speaking. Be sure not to miss our evening public debate in Semester 2!
