MUDS will be on every Tuesday from 5:30pm at our brand new venue,  Old Geology Lecture Theatre 1.

Every Tuesday night, MUDS will be holding an event. Generally this event will be either an internal competition round, a training night, or a social event. Unless it is already a social function, each night will end up at the Corkman Pub on the corner of Pelham and Leicester Streets (opposite the Law building). MUDS nights will always be something like this:

Quarter Finalists
Over July, 12 MUDSians travelled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to compete in the prestigious Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships.  This year's tournament was the largest ever, with 108 making it even more challenging to break than usual!  Congratulations to Melbourne 1 (Lauren Knight, Seamus Coleman, Chris Hibbard) who were octo-finalists and Melbourne 2 (Duncan Kauffman, Nicole Lynch, Sienna Merope) who made it all the way to the Quarters!

Our adjudicators also did extremely well - with our three "trainees" Duncan Campbell, Amy Fazio and Chris Williams aceing the adjudication test and immediately being promoted to full adjudicators!  All three adjudicators chaired panels during the rounds, and Chris Williams adjudicated the Octos and Duncan Campbell the ESL Grand Final.

Also, a MUDS member, Lucia Pietropaoli was Deputy Chief Adjudicator (DCA) of the tournament.  People noted the extremely high quality of interesting and challenging topics over the course of the tournament, as well as the excellent briefings, so well done to Lucia for all her hard work!Next year Australs will be hosted by Ateneo de Manila in the Philippines. More here...Appointment of Public Debates Officer

Congratulations and a very warm welcome to Duncan Campbell on his appointment to the MUDS Committee as Public Debates Officer for the remainder of 2007.

MUDS at the President's Cup
pres cup logo.jpg
MUDS was as usual ably represented at the 2007 President's Cup, held at Wesley College over the 28th-29th April weekend. Co-hosted by the Debater's Association of Victoria and the Monash Association of Debaters, over 4 rounds the competition saw MUDS break to both the novice semi-final (Team A: Daniel White, Daniel Baker & Emma Hassaram) and a team consisting of MUDSians present and past go on to become the champions of the Novice Grand Final (I forgot to eat: Charisma Dungan, Kel Mitchell, Stuart Johnson & Alan MacKinnon).

Our very own MUDS president and her team (The Greatest Moral Challenge of Our Generation: Nicole Lynch, Tim Sonnreich & Prasanna Venkataraman) broke first in the main break undefeated and then subsequently won the President's Cup! Nicole Lynch was also ranked 2nd best speaker of the tournament.

Congratulations to all on their fine efforts and a wonderful weekend of debating!

MUDS in Grand Final at Easters!
MUDS Contingent Easters 2007.jpg        Adjudicators.jpg
 A very happy Melbourne contingent
MUDS adjudicators
MUDS experienced phenomenal success over Easter at the Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships 2007 hosted by the University of Sydney. With a 46-strong contingent featuring 11 teams and 13 adjudicators, Melbourne proved a force to be reckoned with, breaking 3 teams and 3 adjudicators.

In the Grand Final Melbourne was ably represented by Melbourne 7 (Tom McCarthy, Sienna Merope, Jessica Chiew) with Sienna Merope coming away with both Best Novice Speaker and Best Speaker of the tournament, a truly remarkable achievement. Putting on a great Grand Final tussle, the Championship eventually went to University of Queensland 4.

Also breaking were Melbourne 4 (Phil Barker, Nick Tam, Simon Thomas) making the quarter final and Melbourne 1 (Tony Kung, Alex Chapman, Christine Lim) making the octo-finals. With our very own Liz Sheargold as DCA, MUDS adjudicators also fared impressively, with Nicole Lynch, Steve Worcester and Seamus Coleman making the break.
For more Easters results, please see the Easters page and for full contingent details, Contingents.Welcome to 2007!

MUDS is back again in force for a busy new year and plenty of events planned. Look for our stall at O-Week, come meet the committee and pick up a copy of MUDSlinger, the official MUDS magazine. Be sure not to miss the O-Week exhibition debate, which will pit some of MUDS' best debaters against one another.

Remember Tuesday nights are MUDS nights (every Tuesday, 5:30-7:30pm, Level 10 Redmond Barry), and for the first week back MUDS has a demonstration debate lined up to kick off debating for the year. An introductory training session for those new to uni debating in the second week will be followed by the annual Commencement Dinner, a perennial MUDS social highlight. Also coming up is the First Year's Competition, a great opportunity to practise, adjust to uni debating and get some valuable feedback just before Easters trials and the start of Freehills, MUDS' first internal competition of the year.

Also don't forget to renew your membership - visit the MUDS
table at O-week to re-register or sign up as a new member! Otherwise, just come along to one of our MUDS nights or contact our president, Nicole Lynch, to join.

Membership fees for MUDS in 2007 are as follows:
    $10 for non-union members
    $5 for UMSU members
Costs of membership cover all registration and participation in internal competitions, member training nights and practice debates. Membership is highly rewarding!

Hope to see you at MUDS soon!

The MUDS Contingent
Liz Ames, Tom O'Connor (Melbourne A)
and Nicole Lynch (adjudicator)

Australia A
Nicole Lynch and Victor Finkel
Congratulations to the MUDS Contingent who recently attended the Worlds Universities Debating Championships at the University of British Colombia in Vancouver, Canada.  A tiny contingent of one team and one adjudicator ventured to Worlds to take on over 300 teams and 250 adjudicators and had an absolutely phenomenal success.

Melbourne A (Liz Ames and Tom O'Connor) broke 27th to the Octo finals at the largest Worlds ever - a truly impressive achievement - especially for Tom debating at his first ever Worlds!  A second congratulations to Liz for ranking 32nd on the speaker tab!  Nicole Lynch broke as an adjudicator - making a 100% breaking rate for MUDS - and had the honour of adjudicating the Octo-finals, the Quarter-finals and the ESL Grand-final on a panel of 7.

To add to the success, MUDS President Nicole Lynch and Monash President Victor Finkel teamed up as 'Australia A' and were Grand Finalists in the World Masters Debating Championships.

Congratulations!!
News from 2006...
MUDS goes to Womens!

Over the last weekend of the mid-semester break, MUDS sent five and a half teams to Sydney to compete against some of Australia's strongest debaters in the annual women-only tournament. Continuing the trend of strong performances two of those teams (Nicole Lynch with Erica Leaney & Lauren Knight with Claire Lyndsey (Monash)) made the semi's whilst Sarah Kemeny and Laura Bellamy made it all the way to the finals!

Individual performances were also strong with Sarah, Nicole and Sienne Merope ranking 3rd, 5th and 9th on the speaker tab respectively!

Your webmaster is male but word is all participants had a smashing time hitting the town in Sydney as well.

Congratulations to all participants! If you're interested in attending this event next year take a look at the Tournaments section of this website for more details!

MUDS Reaches GRAND FINAL at Australs!

Over the winter break 22 intrepid Mudsians headed to sunny Wellington to compete in and adjudicate the Australasian Championships and had a spectacular showing.

Our flagship- Melbourne 1- broke second in the rounds and were defeated again only in the Grand Final by our friendly rivals from Monash. Congratulations to Lucia, Jess and Liz for a phenomenal tournament and again to Liz for winning the coveted Best Speaker Prize!

Kudos also to Melbourne 2 and Melbourne 4 for breaking to the quarter and octo finals respectively, to the four MUDS speakers that made the top 10 and to all participants for Melbourne's most successful tournament in recent memory.

The 2006 MUDS Annual General Meeting was held on the 24th of May, and ushered in an updated constitution and a new Committee! See details of the new committee under the "About Us" tab.

The Constitutional changes included altering the structure of the committee- something that will be reflected in how we vote in our next AGM in September.

MUDS Dominates at the DAV President's Cup!Congratulations to all the MUDSians who participated in the DAV President's Cup this weekend.  MUDSians Seamus Coleman (DAV Adult Services Officer) and Phil Barker (DAV Training and Development Administrator) did an excellent job running the tournament.  MUDS was represented by both teams in the novice Grand Final, with the winning team Kingston Town (Tom Kelly, Tony Kung and Tim Hickman)  being full of some MUDS stars.  The runners up of the main Grand final, Clapham Omnibus (Duncan Kauffman, Seamus Coleman and Daniel Kinsey) was none other than Melbourne 2 for Australs this year!  Congratulations to all involved!

MUDS Public Debate... a resounding success!

In the lead up to the Victorian State election, the Melbourne University Debating Society proudly hosted a debate on a key election issue...

If you do the crime, you should do the time!
That we should introduce standard minimum sentences for criminal offences.

The debate featured 3 Victorian MPs, the Chief Magistrate of the Victorian Magistrates Court and the President of Liberty Victoria.  An excellent event - thank-you to everyone who attended!

Commencement Dinner

The 2006 Commencement Dinner was held at Nyonya Restaurant in Lygon St followed by an after party at Phoenix Bar on Flinders St.

Wow, what a fantastic night! For those who came to the dinner, you would know that it was filled with fun times, good conversation and slightly warmer than usual surroundings. We honestly hope that you enjoyed it, and take it as a signs of things to come around MUDS.

A big thank-you to Liz Ames and Michael Symons for organising the dinner!

Photos will be up soon.

MUDS' Success at Worlds!

MUDS has achieved outstanding success at the 2006 Dublin World Universities' Debating Championships.  All teams spoke very well and were in contention for the break going into the final day.  Melbourne 1, Lucia Pietropaoli and Elizabeth Sheargold, broke in an amazing 8th place, both ranked in the top 20 speakers and made it all the way to the Quarter Finals where they were knocked out by two Grand Final teams.  Two of our adjudicators, Maryam Jahanshahi and Catherine Muhlebach also broke to the finals.  In another success, Jess Moir won the comedy prize with a speech that receieved a standing ovation (and not just from Australians!).

Congratulations to all involved!

News from 2005...

Melbourne Mini!

This year, once again, Melbourne Mini was an incredibly successful tournament enjoyed by all participants - which included teams and adjudicators from interstate and overseas.  Congratulations and thanks must be extended to the organising committee, for running such an excellent tournament.  MUDS also was highly successful this year at Melbourne Mini, with two MUDSians, Liz Sheargold (Monkey Magic) and Seamus Coleman (Hatchback Crusaders) making the Grand Final, as well as Maryam Jahanshahi (Chief Adjudicator) and Tim Washington adjudicating on the Grand Final panel.  Congratulations also to Liz Sheargold for being equal best speaker for the tournament.

The passing of Hamish Malcolm

It is with the deepest sadness that we would like to inform members of Hamish Malcolm's death. He suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, and though he was resuscitated, his brain had lost too much oxygen, and Hamish had to be taken off life support last week. He was only 25.

For those who knew Hamish, debated with or against him, spoke to him, or even was just aware of his presence, you would know that Hamish was very keen on debating and fascinated by political issues. His friendly British accent will be sorely missed at MUDS.

MUDS, on behalf of its members, would like to pass on our regrets to Hamish's family and friends. Know that he will certainly not be forgotten at the debating society.

If anybody would like to attend his funeral (Monday 31st Oct) or would like to find out more about his birthday event to honour his memory, please email us at mudsonline@gmail.com and we will forward them onto you.

Advanced First Principles Training

The aim of this day is to provide debaters with an opportunity to expand upon their skills through an intensive and quite long matter session. The day will be taken by 3 old (one quasi current) MADies who have a lot of experience with 1st principles.

This training day will NOT have practice debates - the day is aimed at gaining knowledge, and hence, it's important to note that it will go for a while and (hopefully) be advanced. This is not to disuade anyone from attending (sorry if it sounds like that)! Just remember that it'll be like 1st year policitcs/feminism/legal theories/economics squeezed into one day.

So, here are the details! The exact outline of the day is still being confirmed, but remember to keep this date open if you're interested!

DATE: Saturday November 19th
TIME: 10am-5pm
VENUE: Monash Clayton Law School
TRAINERS: Tim S, Kylie and Kim Little

The DAV Annual Dinner

Held at the Harbour Kitchen in the Docklands, the Debaters Association of Victoria's Annual Dinner on the 14th October was one of the best to date. With two courses, free drinks (well...after the $40 fee) and lots of funny awards, the Brownlow/Eurovision combined style worked well. Everyone had loads of fun, so to see people having loads of fun, visit our galleries page!
