Tuesday 30 August, 2011

Hi all!

We hope you had a fabulous time at the MUDS Annual Dinner! We certainly did, with many thanks to Social Officer Penelope Grayling for her hard work in making the night happen!!!

1. MUDS Night: Tuesday 30th August, 5:30 pm: Hercus Theatre, David Caro Building!

This week you get to continue the fight for the Hamish Malcolm Cup in Round 2! Be on time for some fabulous training first, then get right into it! Get excited!

Don't forget about that pesky little rule where every member of your team has to adjudicate at least once! Seriously though, we do require your help to ensure that every debate has an adjudicator and it's also a great opportunity for you to practice your adjudication skillz! Don't worry, if you're new to adjudicating you won't be by yourself on a debate!

2. Calendar for the rest of semester!

You can still express interest in attending Women's via the online form here: http://www.mudsonline.net/external-competitions.

5. Monash Association of Debaters: Vice-Chancellor's Public Debate

Monash University Vice-Chancellor's Public Debate: Should Australia put a price on carbon?

The carbon tax is the defining issue of Australian politics in 2011.

With the Gillard government on the ropes and debate over climate change reaching fever pitch, now is the perfect time for a serious debate about the economic and environmental implications of a price on carbon.

  • Adam Bandt, Federal Member for Melbourne (Greens)
  • John Brumby, Former Victorian Premier
  • Kelly O'Dwyer, Federal Member for Higgins (Liberal Party)
  • John Roskam, Executive Director of the Institute of Public Affairs
  • Laura Smyth, Federal Member for La Trobe (ALP)
  • Victor Finkel, 2011 World Debating Champion and Best Speaker

Refreshments will be served from 5.45 pm, with the debate to commence at 6.30 pm. The debate will be followed by a Q & A session, moderated by Monash University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Ed Byrne.

3. Hamish Malcolm Cup (Internal Competition)

The Hamish Malcolm Cup is our annual semester 2 BP tournament. We highly encourage all MUDSians to get involved by forming a team to debate in this comp. Each member of a team will be required to adjudicate at least once during the tournament, so teams should be no less than 3 people, and probably more to make up for people not being able to come every week. More info will come on Tuesday and a form will go up on the website so you can register your team!

4. MUDS Annual General Meeting 2011 - Tuesday 6th September, 5:30 pm

At the AGM we will be electing a new committee to run the club in 2012. The committee is made of current MUDS members who will continue to be MUDS members in 2012. More information will come closer to the day, including descriptions of the committee positions available and a copy of the constitution.

For now, we are seeking a Returning Officer, who will run the AGM, manage applications for the committee positions and count votes. They are not able to run for a committee position or vote during the AGM. If you are interested in being the Returning Officer, please email muds@mudsonline.net.

Please think about whether you're interested in joining the committee next year! Being on committee is a great opportunity to learn about MUDS and become fully involved, as well as learning plenty of skills that will fatten up your resume! You can find see what positions there are on committee, read the constitution and email relevant committee members about what their role involves via the website: www.mudsonline.net. You can also speak to current committee members at MUDS meetings if you're interested in their position.

5. Melbourne Mini Committee Applications: CLOSING THIS FRIDAY 5PM

Melbourne Mini is a British Parliamentary tournament hosted by the Melbourne University Debating Society. It is usually held on the first weekend after the end of the November exam period. This top-quality tournament provides fantastic practice for debaters and adjudicators from across Australasia in the lead up to Worlds, and an opportunity for those not attending Worlds to improve their BP skills in the company of friends. MUDS is now seeking applications for positions on the MM2011 Organising Committee, so if you've ever dreamt of organising a world-class debating tournament, this is your chance! The following positions are available:

2x Convenor: pretty much run the show, keeping the budget sweet and ensuring the rest of the committee is getting on with it as well as keeping everything running smoothly during the tournament. Have the power to delegate tasks!

Tournament Director: run the tab (who debates who, where etc.) during the tournament. Works closely with the Adj Core.

Registrations Officer: Manages team and adjudicator registrations for the tournament.

2x Logistics Officers: Plan, organise and serve breaky, snacks and lunch during the tournament. Main aim is to ensure there is plenty of food at a low cost so everyone is happy!

Socials Officer: Plans and runs social events, most importantly the Championship Dinner.

There is no specific experience required for any of these positions, however in your application you should include any past experience that you think is relevant. We do not want a copy of your resume, simply a short explanation of why you would like to/should do the job. You are welcome to apply for multiple positions if you please; if so, please only send in one application but list the positions you would be interested in, in order of preference.

Send applications to: committee@mudsonline.net.

Applications due: 5pm, Friday 19th August.

6. Upcoming Tournaments:

There are plenty of tournaments coming up at which you can develop your BP skills and have lots and lots of fun!

Tournaments to which MUDS will send a contingent:

Australian Women's Debating Championships

Each year MUDS sends a contingent of women to the AWDC, a Pro/Am tournament geared towards the development of young female debaters. This year it is to be conveniently held at Monash University. MUDS will be seeking interest from our women soon, so have a think about whether you'd like to come along to debate or adjudicate, and who you might like to debate with (each team must have one 'pro' and one 'am'). Keep your eyes peeled for more information soon, but in the meantime check out the website (http://monashdebaters.com/womens/tournament-information) and the facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/group.php?gid=144045925616798).

We will have a form on our website soon for you to express interest in attending! We'll update you on Tuesday about this!

Tournaments for which you must arrange your own teams (with absolutely anyone, MUDSian or not) and register individually, or register as an adjudicator!

(NB: many MUDSians attend these tournaments each year, they are casual and lots of fun. Speak to older MUDSians and committee members about their experiences and to find out who will be attending this year!):

UNSW IV:

UNSW IV is an Open Motion BP tournament and is running this coming weekend from the 19th to the 21st August. Apologies for the late notice, but if you're keen to go you can register up until midnight on Tuesday! More information about the tournament and a link to the registration can be found on the facebook page:

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?cropsuccess&id=565516598#!/event.php?eid=119541991466767

DAV President's Cup:

President's Cup, the DAV's premier debating tournament, is happening again this year! The tournament will run on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st of August from 9-5pm each day at Wesley College's St Kilda Road campus. There is a separate draw for novice and experienced teams, with food provided throughout the day and a Championship dinner on the Saturday evening. The format is 3-on-3 with POIs and our Chief Adjudicator is the talented Ravi Dutta, whose achievements include being a World's Grand Finalist and an Australs Semi-finalist. More information can be found at the facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=196909540367790
Registration is due WEDNESDAY 17th AUGUST and can be completed here: http://www.dav.com.au/adults/pres_cup.php
The cost for debaters is $40 and $25 for adjudicators. ($10 discount applies for first years, teachers and debaters from interstate).

ANU Spring Mini:

ANU Spring is a very well-attended and enjoyable tournament held in our country's capital! You will see top quality debates at this tournament, where debaters from across Australia get a chance to debate with whomsoever they please! Many MUDSians have been in the past and many will be attending this year so have a chat at MUDS to find out who's going and think about who you'd like to go with. MUDS often coordinates accommodation so you can all stay together as a 'contingent', and you can plan flights so that you're not all alone :) For more info, check out the facebook page:

7. Mudslinger is seeking submissions!

The MUDS newsletter Mudslinger is now accepting article submissions. You can write about anything debating related or something not debating related if you wish! You could also draw or be otherwise creative. If you have something to submit, or would like to ask a question, please email Steph at publications@mudsonline.net!

8. The Australian Voices

We have been asked to let you all know about this great opportunity, so here we go:

Do you like singing? Do you want to travel and sing? The Australian Voices are seeking high achievers for upcoming tours to Asia, Europe, USA and around Australia. Australian Voices alumni include graduates of Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge and currently work for companies like Google, Opera Australia and the federal government. They are doctors, lawyers, engineers, musicians and more! Being a member of The Australian Voices adds real depth to your CV – a clear demonstration of leadership and excellence.

Find out more here: http://www.theaustralianvoices.com/audition

THANKS FOR MAKING IT TO THE END! MUDS LOVES YOU!

See you Tuesday,

Emma Browne
MUDS Secretary.

Sunday 8 May, 2011

1. AUSTRALS TRIALS - Next Sunday, 15th May, Law School (further details to come)

If you are interested in trialling for a spot on one of our Australs teams, please fill out an Expression of Interest form on the website (here: http://www.mudsonline.net/external-competitions). The form must be submitted by Friday 13th May at the latest.

What is Australs? Officially the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships, Australs in 2011 will be running from the 6th to the 14th July at Chung Ang University in Seoul, Korea! With 8 preliminary rounds plus finals, Australs is an amazing tournament designed to showcase some of the best university debating in the world. Apart from the high quality of debating and adjudicating you can expect, Australs also includes an expansive social calender spanning the entire length of the tournament. If you'd like to know more about Australs you can visit the website at http://www.koreaaustrals2011.com/. MUDS has 3 teams (of 3) and 6 adjudicator spots to fill, so if you're interested we highly recommend you attend trials. EVEN IF you think you may not get a spot, you should still trial if you're interested in attending. It is always a good idea to get some practice at trialling so that you feel more comfortable at future trials (eg: for Worlds or future Australs) and you can never predict the outcome of trials.

2. Weekly Meeting: Freehills Cup, Tuesday 10th May, 5:30 pm, Hercus Theatre, Physics Building

This week we will be holding rounds 3 and 4 of the Freehills Cup, so please ensure that your team is able to have enough people attend to debate, and don't forget about the adjudicator rule (every member of your team must adjudicate once!)

In addition, Kelly Butler will be making a very quick presentation on Reply speeches (part of the Australs debating style) before debates commences, so please be there right on time so you don't miss out!

Finally, don't forget to bring along $5 for dinner (this week SUSHI!) and give it to the amazing Ming Kang as soon as you arrive!

3. ADAM Committee 2011

'Another Day At Melbourne,' or 'ADAM,' is an annual debating tournament held in the Australasian 3-on-3 debating style. It is Australia's number one pre-Australs invitational tournament and regularly features a high standard of debating from universities around Australia and around the world. MUDS hosts this tournament on campus, for which we need a committee of dedicated and organised MUDSians! This year the tournament will run from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd July (just after Semester 1 exams). If you're interested in the joining the organising committee, please email a brief description of why you'd like to be involved and any relevant skills or experience to muds@mudsonline.net.

The following committee positions are open for applications:

Convener x2 - generally run the tournament and ensure everything goes smoothly
Treasurer x1 - controls the finances of the tournament
Registrations Officer x1 - arranges team and adjudicator registrations
Logistics Officer x2 - organise all the food for the entire tournament (breakfasts, lunches and snacks)
Socials Officer x1 - organises social events for the Friday and Sunday nights and the Championship Dinner on the Saturday night
Tournament Director x1 - also known as the Tab Director, the TD will run the Tab (who debates who in each round) for the tournament

Please note: most of these positions will require you to be busy during the tournament itself, and thus you may not be able to debate or adjudicate at the tournament.

4. Invitation to attend a Panel Discussion hosted by the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences

There will be a Q&A-style event taking place next Friday, 13 May, hosted by the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences on a topic of interest to their Master of International Relations students. A panel of experts will discuss the current moves toward democratisation in North Africa and the Middle East, and consider if and when the international community has a ‘responsibility to protect’ populations from grave violations of human rights (as we’ve seen in Libya in recent times). I have attached a flyer with further information that was sent to MUDS about the event.

If you have any questions or would like to register to attend, please visit: http://graduate.arts.unimelb.edu.au/events/.

Thanks!

Wednesday 4 May, 2011

Hi MUDSians!

Firstly, I would like to start by congratulating our wonderful Easters Contingent on a terrific tournament! Particular congratulations are in order for Melbourne 9 (Daniel Golder, Michelle Bashta and Lachlan Rule) and adjudicators Steph D'Souza and Kelly Butler for breaking to the finals rounds! Special thanks to Michael Ciesielski and Tim Blair for organising the contingent and ensuring everyone who attended had a fabulous time!

1. Weekly Meeting, Tuesday 5:30 pm, CHARLES PEARSON THEATRE, ERC (NEW VENUE!) - Freehills Cup Rounds 1 and 2

This week's meeting is to be held in a new venue, a lecture theatre in the ERC building. As we are running two rounds of debating back to back it is essential that everyone turns up on time so we can get the first round under way!

  • For this comp you are free to arrange your own teams, as long as you comply with the Novice Rule (each team must have AT LEAST 1 novice, being someone who has not been to 2 Easters or 1 Australs)
  • We highly recommend that your team be 4 or 5 people as this will ensure that at least 3 are available to debate each round as well as allowing you to provide adjudicators as required (see below)
  • You can sign up as a team (but each team member should sign up separately!) or as an individual (in which case we'll put you in a team)
  • If you wish to adjudicate only, please email muds@mudsonline.net with your name and a brief outline of your adjudication experience.

PLEASE SIGN UP FOR THE INTERNAL COMPETITION HERE: http://www.mudsonline.net/internalcompetitions

PLEASE NOTE (must-read fine print):

  1. All team members must adjudicate at some point during the competition in order for your team to be eligible to break to the finals rounds, so even if your team has 4 or 5 people we suggest that you all try to turn up each night so that 1 or 2 can adjudicate. It is essential that teams provide adjudicators otherwise we will not have enough adjudicators to go around!
  2. As there are two rounds of debates, the night is likely to run later than previous nights. Never fear! Please bring along $5 and we will arrange for a PIZZA DINNER between the rounds to keep you going!
  3. If you have class until 6:15 you will have to inform your team members (or us if you register as an individual) and simply come as soon as possible. You may choose to adjudicate the first round, as you should be able to arrive in time for the start of the first debate (please let us know if you would like to do that), or you can watch your team (or debate with very little preparation) and join in the second round of the night.

Thanks, see you Tuesday!

Emma Browne
MUDS Secretary.

Monday 25 April, 2011

Hi All,

Just thought I'd let you all know that MUDS is NOT ON this week, as it is the university break and EASTERS is on. Please don't turn up expecting anything other than locked rooms and loneliness :)

Best wishes to all our EASTERS teams and adjudicators and to everyone else we hope you enjoy your break and keep an eye on your emails later in the week for an update about MUDS the following week!

Emma Browne
MUDS Secretary.

Saturday 16 April, 2011

Hi everyone!

1. Weekly Meeting, Tuesday 5:30pm, Hercus Theatre.

This week is the second week of the Pre-Easters Competition, so all Easters teams and adjudicators should be there, as well as any other MUDs members who would like to debate or adjudicate or watch.

2. Easters Vacancies!

MUDS is desperately seeking adjudicators to fill places at Easters in order to meet our adjudication requirements and keep all of our teams! There may also be places for female debaters. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING EASTERS AND FILLING ONE OF THESE PLACES MUDS NEEDS TO KNOW ASAP! This is really urgent so if you're interested please email muds@mudsonline.net right away!

What do you get out of Easters? At the exceptionally good price of $470 you get travel to and from Adelaide, a team t-shirt, 4 nights of very nice accommodation, all meals provided, a great experience and plenty of social events with lots of free alcohol, as well as some great debating/adjudicating opportunities!

3. Easters Training Day this Sunday 17th April, 10am Promptly!, Law School, room 108.

This full training day, including 2 training sessions from Phil Barker and 2 debates and opportunities for adjudication is open to ALL MUDS MEMBERS, regardless of whether or not you are attending Easters. For Easters attendees it is compulsory, and for others we highly encourage you to attend as it is a great day for improving skills and practising debates and adjudication if you'd like to have a go at that.

You must email muds@mudsonline.net if you'd like to attend to debate if you're not in an Easters team, so we can create swing teams for debating.

Easters team members and adjudicators MUST email muds@mudsonline.net if they DO NOT WISH TO ATTEND, as it is assumed you will be attending.

4. Monash Easters Training Day, tomorrow 2-6pm

MUDS debaters and adjudicators have been invited to attend the Monash Association of Debaters Easters training day being held tomorrow (Saturday) at the Monash Clayton campus. This is a great chance to get more practice (the more the better!) before Easters, and try out debating some extra topics (the more you've tried the more prepared you'll be for topics at Easters!). The training involves 2 debates with excellent quality adjudication and feedback. If you and your team are interested in attending, please contact MAD externals officer Gemma at monash.debaters.externals@gmail.com ASAP for more information.

5. Free Comedy Festival Tickets!

Toby Halligan (former ANU debater) is offering free tickets to his comedy festival show.
The first 5 people to reply to muds@mudsonline.net will get free double passes to attend. The dates for the giveaway are: Tuesday 19th, Wednesday 20th or Thursday 21st April. The following is a description of the show:

"The excellent Toby Halligan (that's me!) is doing his first solo show, Electile Dysfunction, in this years Comedy Festival and we're keen to get students into the show to spread the word.

What is this?

Political satirist, improviser and all-round great guy Toby Halligan is making his Melbourne Comedy Festival solo debut with Electile Dysfunction. Ever gotten drunk, gone home with someone, and then been embarrassed when you can't perform? 2010 was the year Australia went to bed with Kevin, woke up with Julia and found Tony Abbott hiding in the closet. Australian politics has never been so flaccid and it'll take more than nasal spray to fix it. Toby Halligan has the hilarious solutions to help Australia deal with its disappointment."

Thanks!

Emma Browne
Secretary.

Wednesday 13 April, 2011

Hi all!

1. Weekly meeting, Tuesday 5:30 pm, Hercus Theatre again - Pre-Easters Competition

TRAINING:
This week we return to the Hercus Theatre in the Physics Podium, where we will first hear well-renowned debater Nicole Lynch deliver training on the topic of Feminism. This is sure to be an incredibly interesting and informative training session as feminism and feminist arguments often come up in debates where you might, or might not, expect them to. Having a good grounding in how to make feminist arguments will ensure you don't say anything too offensive or miss the point in future debates!

Please note that I have attached the slides from Tim's training last week, so you can re-read them. They'll also be put up online alongside the training session videos. We highly recommend you check them out if you missed the session, or look at them again to make sure you understand, as Tim went through a lot of concepts that are key to strong case construction and will prove very useful to you!

DEBATES:
This week is the commencement of our two-week Pre-Easters Competition. The aim of the competition is to give Easters teams and adjudicators a few weeks to prepare together, as well as enabling non-Easters debaters and adjudicators to participate. If you wish to be involved in the competition (All Easters teams and adjudicators should be involved, and anyone else is welcome!) you must sign up via the website: http://www.mudsonline.net/internalcompetitions.

NOTES:
- If you are in an Easters team you MUST debate in that team during this competition.
- If you are in an Easters team and won't be able to make either this week or the following week, please let your team members know, and/or email Rebecca and Michelle at internal.competitions@mudsonline.net.
- If you are not in an Easters team, or an Easters adjudicator, you CAN STILL DEBATE OR ADJUDICATE during this competition. Please sign up online.
- When signing up please note that a single member from a team can sign up a whole team as long as they have the relevant details of team members. Alternatively, if you are signing up without a team or don't know your team members' details, you can sign up as an individual and we will put you in a team.
- Your team name can be whatever you like: If you're an Easters team you might want to put down your Easters Team name (Eg: Melbourne 5) as this will make it easier for you to remember during Easters itself. If you want to make up a witty team name then please feel free! Non-Easters teams can call themselves whatever they like! If you don't assign yourselves a team name we will assign you one :)

2. Easters Attendees

PAYMENT:
If you are attending Easters but haven't yet paid MUDS please do so immediately, as you risk missing out altogether if we don't receive your payment ASAP.

TRAINING DAY - SUNDAY 17TH APRIL:
All Easters debaters and adjudicators please remember to keep this Sunday free or to apply for leave from work etc. NOW as the training day is an essential part of your Easters preparation! The full day will include two training sessions on debating skills from incredibly experienced MUDSian Phil Barker as well as two full debates and extended adjudications, giving debaters and adjudicators plenty of opportunity to improve their skills and teamwork in the lead-up to Easters. More details will follow, but for now please put this date in your diaries/phones/calenders/long-term memories!

That's all folks, see you on Tuesday!

Emma Browne
MUDS Secretary.

Sunday 3 April, 2011

Hello lovely MUDSians!

1. Weekly Meeting, 5:30 pm, Harold White Lecture Theatre, Arts Building (Cnr Swanston and Grattan Streets)

TRAINING:

This week's training will be run by highly experienced and esteemed debater Tim Sonnreich, who will be taking us through the nuances of case construction. Tim has written an article on this very subject, which was published in the Monash Debating Review, and which I have attached. It is strongly recommended that you read the article before the Tuesday training session, as it will help you to follow and get the most out of Tim's presentation, particularly if you are relatively new to debating. The article you want is the Feature Article: There is no spoon, commencing on page 7.

EASTERS TEAM FORMATION:

MUDS will be forming Easters teams this Tuesday - make sure you attend that night if you'd like to debate at Easters. The Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships (affectionately known as "Easters") are held towards the start of every year, and the four-day tournament is a great way for novices to jump into university debating.

This year, Easters will be held at the University of Adelaide from the 26th to the 29th April. As well as the debating, Easters includes some excellent social events, and a Championship Dinner. MUDS will arrange a chartered bus for the journey, and the tournament organisers provide meals, accommodation, and some alcohol.

You're also welcome to come to team formation if you can't attend Easters but still want to debate on Tuesday. If this is you, please email internal.competitions@mudsonline.net.

If you can't attend team formation, but are still keen to come to Easters, please email vice.president@mudsonline.net before Tuesday afternoon.

3. MUDSlinger is seeking articles!

MUDSlinger is the MUDS newsletter and is currently seeking articles and other submissions for the EASTERS Edition! Write about your MUDS experience so far as a 1st/2nd/3rd...etc year, or you previous experience of EASTERS or AUSTRALS!  Write something witty about debating in general if you like, or if drawing is more your thing why don't you create a debating-related cartoon? This could be your chance to get published and shine! I think you get the idea, so if you have something you'd like to submit please email it to our Publications Officer Steph at publications@mudsonline.net!

2. DAV Adjudicator Accreditation

If you took the adjudicator training and are not yet accredited with the DAV but would like to be, please contact Monique at vpat@dav.com.au.

Thanks! See you on Tuesday in the Harold White Lecture Theatre!

Sunday 27 March, 2011

Hello everyone!

1. MUDS Weekly Meeting: Tuesday 29th March, 5:30 pm, HERCUS THEATRE

Back in our old lecture theatre! PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO DEBATES THIS WEEK!

On Tuesday at 5:30pm in the Hercus Theatre, a representative from the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) will present their beginner adjudicator training. As well as teaching you how to adjudicate debates at university, taking a short online adjudication test after the training will also accredit you to adjudicate the DAV Schools Competition, where adjudicators are paid $44 or more per night. Whether you're looking to adjudicate the Schools Competition, interested in fulfilling your team's adjudication requirement for the 3-v-3 Cup, want to learn more about debating, or are just curious, you're sure to find the training useful.

Bookings are not essential, but would be appreciated to give us an idea of numbers as there are some printed materials that we provide to attendees: please RSVP to muds@mudsonline.net.

What to bring:
Yourself
Pen and paper
OPTIONAL: $10 - If you decide to join the Debaters Association of Victoria, the membership fee is $10 if you pay at the training, or $15 if you elect instead to have it taken out of your first adjudication payment.

There will also be concurrent training provided for those who are already accredited with the DAV or who do not wish to participate in adjudicator training.

We highly recommend you come along for the training as it will be a great opportunity to improve your advanced debating skills and get some early preparation in for the 3v3 competition and EASTERS!

2. EASTERS Expression of Interest!

It's not too late to express interest in attending EASTERS, and you don't have to be 100% sure you want to go to express interest. You can find out more about EASTERS here: http://www.adelaideeasters.com.au/, or on our website main page where we published last week's newsletter containing a short spiel about it. If you'd like to express your interest, fill in this quick form: http://www.mudsonline.net/external-competitions.

Thanks for reading! See you Tuesday!
