MUDS Update: Week 7
Wednesday 13 April, 2011

Hi all!

1. Weekly meeting, Tuesday 5:30 pm, Hercus Theatre again - Pre-Easters Competition

TRAINING:
This week we return to the Hercus Theatre in the Physics Podium, where we will first hear well-renowned debater Nicole Lynch deliver training on the topic of Feminism. This is sure to be an incredibly interesting and informative training session as feminism and feminist arguments often come up in debates where you might, or might not, expect them to. Having a good grounding in how to make feminist arguments will ensure you don't say anything too offensive or miss the point in future debates!

Please note that I have attached the slides from Tim's training last week, so you can re-read them. They'll also be put up online alongside the training session videos. We highly recommend you check them out if you missed the session, or look at them again to make sure you understand, as Tim went through a lot of concepts that are key to strong case construction and will prove very useful to you!

DEBATES:
This week is the commencement of our two-week Pre-Easters Competition. The aim of the competition is to give Easters teams and adjudicators a few weeks to prepare together, as well as enabling non-Easters debaters and adjudicators to participate. If you wish to be involved in the competition (All Easters teams and adjudicators should be involved, and anyone else is welcome!) you must sign up via the website: http://www.mudsonline.net/internalcompetitions.

NOTES:
- If you are in an Easters team you MUST debate in that team during this competition.
- If you are in an Easters team and won't be able to make either this week or the following week, please let your team members know, and/or email Rebecca and Michelle at internal.competitions@mudsonline.net.
- If you are not in an Easters team, or an Easters adjudicator, you CAN STILL DEBATE OR ADJUDICATE during this competition. Please sign up online.
- When signing up please note that a single member from a team can sign up a whole team as long as they have the relevant details of team members. Alternatively, if you are signing up without a team or don't know your team members' details, you can sign up as an individual and we will put you in a team.
- Your team name can be whatever you like: If you're an Easters team you might want to put down your Easters Team name (Eg: Melbourne 5) as this will make it easier for you to remember during Easters itself. If you want to make up a witty team name then please feel free! Non-Easters teams can call themselves whatever they like! If you don't assign yourselves a team name we will assign you one :)

2. Easters Attendees

PAYMENT:
If you are attending Easters but haven't yet paid MUDS please do so immediately, as you risk missing out altogether if we don't receive your payment ASAP.

TRAINING DAY - SUNDAY 17TH APRIL:
All Easters debaters and adjudicators please remember to keep this Sunday free or to apply for leave from work etc. NOW as the training day is an essential part of your Easters preparation! The full day will include two training sessions on debating skills from incredibly experienced MUDSian Phil Barker as well as two full debates and extended adjudications, giving debaters and adjudicators plenty of opportunity to improve their skills and teamwork in the lead-up to Easters. More details will follow, but for now please put this date in your diaries/phones/calenders/long-term memories!

That's all folks, see you on Tuesday!

Emma Browne
MUDS Secretary.
